Cam Chain

Recommended Posts

I have a 05 KLR250. I've checked the valves a few times and made the adjustments. Is the tension on the cam chain an automatic type or does it need a manual adjustment? If its a manual type, how is the adjustment done? Thanks.

The "Parent" KLR600 manual says the cam chain tensioner is "non-retuirn type," installation involves turning the pushrod clockwise with a screwdriver until about 10 mm (a little over 3/8") protrudes (end of rod to flat on adjuster body), holding the adjuster onto the cylinder block while the mounting bolts are finger-tightened, then torquing the bolts to 7.0 ft-lb.

No alternate instructions appear in the KLR250-specific manual; so--assume the procedures are identical.

EDIT: SEE POST BELOW. APPARENTLY, KLR250 HAS AUTOMATIC CAM CHAIN TENSIONER, NOT DESCRIBED ADEQUATELY IN MANUALS.

yes the klr250 has an automatic cam chain tensioner, and you simply remount with mounting bolts half way, then screw in the center of acct with cap bolt removed in a clockwise dir a couple of turns, then while holding, cinch up mounting bolts, then release the screw tension and spring will screw adjuster to proper tension. And if you have taken the acct apart, then you'll have to properly put it back together before re-installing in this manner.
