250f or 450f or 250 2 stroke?

Recommended Posts

currently on a 2000 yz250 i do alot of track riding at island motocross here in ny but i also do a ton of offroadriding up in pa ....question is.....im in the market for a new bike i am torn between the 250f and the 450f......if i go with a 250f it will be either a yamaha or the new suzuki / 450 f the yamaha or the honda.....ive been riding for almost 20 years but looking to get better at the motocross track keeep hearing get the 250 four stroke ill be faster on that then the 450 at the track im so torn..lol power is my problem ...stepping down to the 250 fourtsoke ill be giving up some power not too big a deal on the track but off road....im a lil worried........th eonly other things that concern me....i have carpel tunnel syndrome in both my hands and the extra weight of a 450...about 10 pounds might aggravate my hands more over the course of the day ...i know people say its only 10 pounds......a 125 2 stroke and a 250 2 stroke are seperated by around 10-12 pounds and that feels like nite and day .........or worst case i go with the new yz250 i can get on for about 5,000 out the door from yamaha dealer ......5500 for a 250f or 6200 for a 450.......any thoughts on this?any help will be greatly appreciated thanx steve

It sounds like a 450 would be a good step up for you. It should have plenty of torque for sand riding and if you can tame a 450 on a MX track you should be pretty much unbeatable.

Id go for a Yamaha YZ 450F if it were me, but the Honda 450 is a nice bike too.

I was a tried and true 2-stroke guy up until 2003 when I bought my first thumper, a CRF 450. I have never been a track guy but have always enjoyed fast trails, jumps etc. I was super nervous about the 4-stroke because I had never ridden one and was afraid that it wouldn't have the fast throttle response of my old CR 250...but I bought it anyway.

I am currently without a bike but am getting a new WR 450 just as soon as the local dealer gets another one (I have to get the WR to be able to ride in the summer in CA).

I am currently borrowing a buddys bike for a short ride this weekend and it's a 2002 Suzuki RM 250 2-stroke. I live on a 2.5 acre parcel and took it out back for a quick spin and man what a blast from the past. It's a real trip getting back on a two smoker after so many years on the four.

I like it but, I wouldn't buy it again. The whiplash power surge is fun and brings back great memories but the 4-strokes are just so much more manageable and smooth. I've got arm pump just from a few short laps in my back yard.

I don't really know how to give you the right advise, you have to ride both and decide what's best for you. I can tell you that being bikeless and really wanting another, I was really thinking about buying an older 2-stroke (green sticker in CA 2002 and prior on 2-strokes) and even though I'll be riding one this weekend, there is just no way I could own one again.

Four stroke for me...

Chad

im def leaning towards a 4 stroke its just 250f or 450 for me.....im only 5.6 but im 165lbs at 7.5%bf and a semi competitive powerlifter so strength is not even an issue ..i do 20 laps at a clip on my 250 and barely break a sweat im just wondering if the added weight of the 450 over my 2 stroke is gonna make it harder on my arm pump/carpel tunnel problems....

Could you bench press your motorcycle? That should be a deciding factor. I'd go to the dealer, lay the bike on top of me, get some associates to spot, and bench them all. Which ever feels the best, get that one. :applause:

Id go with the YZ250f... I just got an 07, and its an amazing machine. It should haul around a track, though I havent had the chance yet. It will be lighter and faster than your 01 too.

Arm pump could happen on any bike. I'm no specialist but I'd say simply because your hands don't have to work as hard, the four stroke is it.

You need to ride both thumpers and compare/see how your hands and arms feel after a few laps on each. You've got 20 years exp., if you're arms are cool after a test ride, get the 450. No such thing as too much power for someone with that kind of experience.

keep your 250 two stroke and get the 450F, and be a happy man!

I have one of each displacement bike in my stable. 125 smoker, 250F, 250 smoker, and a 450F. It is nice to have a choice.

Go with the 2007 Honda 450f---you will love it, and besides, there is nothing to can't do on it.

That would be my pick.

I'm agreeing here....I got off a KX 250 onto a 250F and think I get more arm pump because I am pushing harder and not riding as relaxed. Also, when riding in the woods I don't miss the power, but on the track I definitely do, not having as much point and shoot power to clear difficult jumps the first time and also going up against 250 two strokes and 450's in the vet class- I can definitely tell the power difference!

I know a couple guys who have gone from a 250t / 450f to a 250f and claimed to be happy with their decision, but I'll never understand why.

Get either the 450 or the YZ250 2-stroke. Forget the 250F. I bought into that myth that you'll be just as fast, and it's not so. Just switched to a 450 and would never go back.

The 250F bikes are fun to ride, fast enough against each other (but not against the 450s), but also require more attention and maintenance.

If you're not going to be a hard-core racer, then the YZ250 makes the most sense all around. Just as fast as the 450s, but lighter and cheaper. If I could afford 2 bikes right now, the YZ250 would be the second one.
