KLR650 Cylinder Head bolts

Recommended Posts

First post, begging for help...

I'm trying to get the head off my European 1998 KLR650 to change a suspect head gasket.

Looking at the diagram in the workshop manual, it describes the 4 main bolts (numbered 1-4) plus a collection of smaller bolts (numbered 5-11). I can't find the smaller bolts!

The bolts numbered 5,6,7,8 appear to be exactly where the right hand side IN and EX exhaust valves are. I'm just not getting this at all.

Bolt 9 appears to be an allen bolt accessed from outside the engine.

Bolts 10, 11 I think are the long bolts that held the guide that goes over the top of the cam chain.

Additionally, there appears to be an extra 2 domed nuts on the outside of the barrel, one roughly above the inlet port, one above the exhaust port.

Anyone cast any light on this? Especially the 5,6,7,8 bolts.

PB.

1,2,3,4 are the big head bolts. 5,6 are the acorn nuts on the underside of the head. 7,8 are the cylinder acorn nuts (retighten). 9 is the socket head cap screw on the outside. 10,11 are the long M6 bolts by the cam chain, or on a newer one, they hold down the cam chain cover as well.

You'll need a crow's foot wrench to torque the acorn nuts.
