Disconnect Pink Wire

Recommended Posts

Yes i did it, and bike is stronger and more agressive at mid & high. :naughty:

Mine has airbox mods, top and sides, 170; 48; PC496 and now pink wire mods.

Next step a R header is expected...if one make offer !! :bonk:

My wifes uncle just bought a CRF450X a few weeks ago. What is this pink wire mod you are talking about?

I believe you are the first person i think i have heard of to where it made that much difference.

Did you do that mod by itself of did you you other mods at the same time?

P.S. Do you have a pic of that PC496 on your bike?

The difference is noticable, is an improvement, and only works when you approach the tuning of the "R" model (airbox, exhaust, jetting,). It is especially noticable with an R cam. It is not about increasing hp, but improving ridability.

What does it do?

Judging from the dyno sheets, more RPM (500+-). Or did I miss something?

OK guys, At first i did jetting, PC496 and later on airbox but was not really satisfied. My previous bike was a 450R with some enduro mods (rear wheel, X3, lighting i.e more weight as a flywheel) My ridding experience ? 31 years with 15 at intermediate level with some european races. I'm not a 4 stroke specialist but my feeling is accurate and when i disconnected this pink wire, i felt bike was clearer, took rpm easier and feel faster. In my "Alps garden" we have tight single tracks and some large forest track. Front wheel wanted to stand up in 4th, before it was in 3rd.

Krannie, what should be my next step to approach R models ?

Cam stage 1 or Cam from a R or R header ?

Thanks for the pics and anwsers. The 496 looks alot better than i thought it would. The only other pic i have seen it on is a 650r and it stuck out about 12" I think i might pull the pink wire today. What have i got to lose.

Or what have you really got to gain?! Mine pink is still intact, and yes... I run the R cam. I pulled it once, and thought there wasn't a huge difference or a noticeable difference that I'd need to risk floating the valves... or anymore damage due to high rpm (where I ride mostly).

... just because you can, doesn't mean you need to... or should. :bonk:

Note that Johnnyairtime says that he rides in the upper rpms mostly, and therefore does not want to pull the pinkwire, for fear of increasing rpms excessively, and floating the valve springs. I agree, this is a absolute possibility. But I have my bike tuned quite differently. I have the longest header I could find with the longest gradient taper: DR D. My bike has no over-rev at all; it feels down a good 3 hp on the very top compared to the short header bikes I've ridden. But, I have way, way, more throttle response than any other x I have ridden throughout the entire power band. I can ride fast all day and not even spin the tire if I pay close attention. I didn't really plan it this way, it just happened and I love it. I have the '05 R cam which makes the same power everywhere, just more of it.

My understanding of the pink wire is:

- Raises the rev limiter by 500rpm.

- Changes the ignition advance curve to begin sooner in the rpm range (hense the 'snappier' feel in the low mid)

- The advance curve is from the '02 R model, and works best with the '02 R cam (which is the 'hotest' factory cam, I am told).

I don't want my bike to have an R powerband because with the extra 25 lbs, the R 'hit' just makes the bike feel heavier, and harder to control.

Good post Krannie.... good info about how your bike is setup. :bonk:

My bike definitely spins the rear wheel. :naughty:

Oh, don't get me wrong, it will spin the rear wheel all day long if I dial it on to do so. But unlike other bikes I have ridden, it only has 49 hp when I ask for it. The rest of the time it has whatever level I dial in.

Ain't that the truth...You're probably pretty happy you can't roost yourself:eek: The 450X is the WORST bike for me to be behind for roost. Damn rock throwers:naughty:

They do hurt and I have never ever been a fan of chest protectors but now that a few of my buddys have 450's I will definitley be buying 1. Boulders at 60+ hurt. :bonk:

650R is worse I think.... Darn Ron Wilson! :naughty:

... and I make sure to not roll on hard at D38 when I come by anyone... Racer etiquette. Some don't have that etiquette and just hammer it. If they wanna go bar-to-bar... well, then my etiquette goes right out the window. :D

LOL....Did you not post a picture somewhere of the Wilson Pox??? Perfectly stated about rider etiquette and I sometimes expect it from Experts. I discovered very recently fast guys don't like being passed and when they pass back they are sometimes etiquette-less....to say it politely:busted:
