Corral Canyon Work Day

Recommended Posts

Next Volunteer work day is June 23, 2007

A new group is forming, the "Freinds of Corral Canyon". If you want to be part of this, email Richard Tull at rtull@fs.fed.us

Here's the latest email from Richard Tull

Corral Canyon Update June 2007

There are some new developments regarding Corral Canyon worth reporting.

SDAR trail adoption

The San Diego Adventure Riders have officially adopted the Kernan Cycle

Trail from Four Corners to the crossing. I will be installing signs that

show this as soon as they arrive (they have been ordered.)

Congratulations SDAR and thanks for stepping up.

Phase Two of Reopening

Phase two of the reopening effort is well under way and all the needed

materials have been purchased and delivered. A combination of agency and

volunteer work has resulted in about two miles of the needed travel

corridor installed so far. I am getting a lot of folks asking “when will

the next phase be completed?” The answer is “If you are involved it will

happen sooner. If not it will happen later.” Like I said, all the

materials needed are here but as we are now in fire season, most of the

help I was getting from conservation camp crews and fire personnel is

now focused on fire fighting activities. The bottom line is that the

more people who donate some of their time to working on the project, the

faster the area will reopen.

Volunteer Work Day 6/23/2007

Speaking of volunteer days, I am hoping to have some help on Saturday

June 23rd. The phase two fence project is the only activity I have

planned for the day but folks are welcome to come up with other helpful

projects on their own (sprucing up the campgrounds or something like

that). Bring your work clothes, gloves, eye protection, sunscreen and

lunch. I will supply water and of course lots of fence material and

pliers. We will gather at Bobcat meadow campground between 9:30 and 10:00

that morning.

Friends of Corral Canyon

Proactive off-roaders are in the process of forming a user advocacy

group, the Friends of Corral Canyon. “Friends” groups have proven to be

a very effective resource when partnered with land management agencies

and this is a welcome development. Everyone who considers Corral Canyon

their significant recreation resource should get involved in this new

group. An organized group of proactive users who have Corral Canyon as

their commonality will be an important component in the long term

sustainability of the OHV area. A web site is under construction but in

the meantime I will collect email addresses for anyone interested in

joining. I also want to pass along the fact that the group is still in

the process of forming so now is the time step up and be part of the

creation of the organization. People who are willing to get involved and

take leadership roles are needed to get the Friends of Corral Canyon

going. If you can offer any organizing assistance contact me and I will

forward your info to those who will be glad to have your help.

National Trails Day Success

National Trails Day (6/2/2007) found a determined band of off-roaders

from various different user groups working on the phase two reopening

project. Several thousand more feet of the travel corridor was

installed. Many thanks to everyone who showed up.

Volunteer Hosts at Corral Canyon

Thanks to Ed Stovin, President of the San Diego Off Road Coalition and

San Diego Off Road Magazine for running the ad asking for people to be

volunteer hosts at Corral Canyon and Bobcat Meadow. I am pleased to

report that I have already had one family sign up to host at Corral

Canyon. Their first weekend was 6/8/07 to 6/10/07 and they did a great

job. They also told me they had fun and enjoyed the experience. They are

the first of what I hope will be a pool of volunteers who want to take

turns hosting at Corral Canyon and Bobcat Meadow. Contact me if you want

to help.

Finally, thanks to all who have been helping get Corral Canyon back

open. Also thanks to those folks who are getting the message out about

how important it is to buy the Adventure Pass when going to Bear Valley

and Corral Canyon. The Adventure Pass is the most dependable funding

source left, and since the money goes to the area you are recreating in,

it is a good deal that helps keep the OHV area open and enjoyable.

I'm feeling all warm and fuzzy right now (maybe it's the Captain Morgan). Seriously though, thanks Richard and everyone involved for all the hard work! I, for one, totally appreciate it!

How do these fences go up? I know you said you got tools but anything I could bring?

i would bring a pair of pliers that can grab a pc. of wire.

after the poles are rammed in you drag a 330 ft. roll of wire fence in place, then

two or three times each pole you take a two inch pc. of 12 ga. (?) wire

and wrap it around the pole and crimp it on the wire fence on each side.

the 2 inch wire is a bitch. thats where next time I'm using my own set

of pliers. the one's Richard had sucked.

I can't make it this time, i have to go fishing (just kidding rib eye).

I've had a trip planed to the mammoth mx races for some time.

When someone steps forward to head this Friends Of Corral Canyon (focc)

i will be on the Board (if you'll have me) I've been on the board of little league

and soccer so i know some of the bullsh*t we will go through, including

fund raising, ect.

Be prepared to get real dirty, sunburn and sore. Almost sounds like ridin. The dry dirt with ash makes a mess of your white shirt and socks. Its for a good cause and was well worth it even tho I didn't get to go riding. Put me down as a member of the FoCC(?) and let me know what it takes even tho I had plans up at Mammoth that weekend too.. I'll be the treasurer(JK) We need to get involved in this and I sure hope TT makes a better showing than last time. Ron you fill in for me this time and next time I'll do Bronco Peak with ya:ride: ?

Myself and 2 others wanted to go riding this weekend, and have come across this place. Normally we ride Ocotillo Wells, or I ride here in Mexicali at Laguna Salada. I wanted to get some riding in on Saturday the 23rd before I have a race on the 30th here in Mexicali.

Yesterday I drove from Buckman Springs on to OHV road then past the National Guard spot, and came to a part with a cement bridge that looks like a golf cart path about 20 feet long, I went about another 1/2 mile and turned back. After seeing the map today it looks like I need to go further to find the camp area. I did see one area near there that had a wood fence and a locked gate. Also it talked about buying an adventure pass, but how much is it, and where do I get it at.

You have to keep going up the road. The adventure pass can be purchased for 30 bucks at the Pine Valley gas station 2 exits west of Buckman Springs. There is also a staging area at that exit.

You were still a few miles short of four corners... Stay on the road (Moreno Stoakes Valley Road) until you hit the saddle after all of the paved switchbacks and waterbars. This area is Four Corners.... go straight and you go to Corral Campground, turn left and you go to Bobcat Meadows campground.
