1980 xt 250 head gasket

Recommended Posts

I've got an 1980 Yami xt 250- 3200 miles. It is seeping oil from the head gasket- I was wondering if it is possible to remove the head and change the gasket without removing the motor? The thing runs great- full choke and it will start on the first kick after sitting for weeks. If anybody has any experience with this bike some advice would be appreciated.

thanks!

I'm pretty sure you need to remove the motor from the frame to get the head off. It's simple, though. There are no frame rails under the motor, so you just unbolt the carb and exhaust, which you're doing anyway to get the head off, unplug the spark plug cap, remove the motor mount bolts, slide out the swingarm pivot bolt and lift the frame off the motor.
