2004 yz450 rebuild problem

Well i have been in the process of fixing and putting back together my good friends 2004 yz450

well he had trans problems so i got new parts and put that back together...

didnt replace anything else other then the gaskets... well we got it fired up today and it started knocking a bit and sounded like piston slap or rod knocking in a car...

now we didnt put the timing chain black plastic tensior thing on the front side of the motor... i know that was a stupid idea but i couldnt get the cams in with that in the motor...

could that have been slappin?

ohh and then we got it started again and it ran for like 2 secs then just cut out and the kickstarter goes down 1/2 way and just LOCKS

but i took off the timing cover and turned the crank manually and it is fine...

any ideas what this could be.... please help

now we didnt put the timing chain black plastic tensior thing on the front side of the motor... i know that was a stupid idea but i couldnt get the cams in with that in the motor...

Take it back apart and install the chain guide like it's supposed to be installed. If it was interfering with the installation of the cam chain, the upper locating peg that sits in the cylinder was out of position. That piece HAS TO be there.

As far as the starter problem, I'm afraid you're going to have to open the rigt side up and figure it out.

it seems very high in position... but there was a grove that the guide sits in and the round end of it fits perfect... but it was just too high up and rubbing on the cam and really had to push hard on the cam to get it to seat...

maybe i have to bend it away from the chain towards the top? it was locked in place

would this piece missing cause noise?

The round end on the bottom is not the problem, it's the pegs at the level where the cylinder deck is that you have out of place. I don't know if it will cause noise or not, because I've never even considered leaving it out.

Your trying to put it in upside down. Ive been there before.

yeah it wasnt upside down just bent to hell and would line up properly

it was making a nit of noise and has been sorted out for now...

now the bike feels like it has no compression... i took off the head to fix that... the valves are properly aligned... but there is a TON of air coming out the thick black hose on top of the cylinder head....

is the decompression messed up somehow?

I know this is an old tread, but....I have a 2004 WR450 with a similar issue.

I replaced my damaged cylinder head and installed new cylinder rings. It’s back together now, but it will not start. The electric starter is straining to turn the engine over. I also noticed air coming in and out of the crank case tube. When I installed the exhaust cam, I had to push the front timing guide down a bit, ¼”. I was wondering if that is normal? I triple checked the valve gaps. They are good. Any suggestions ideas are appreciated.

Hey guys I just bought a bike last night. So the seller said the bike will turn on but then die. We didn't try it because it was really late at night and it was raining (seat was wet). But he said if you bump start it, it will turn on and ride. So what do you think the problem is? I just want to make sure it runs... I probably won't be able to bump start it till Saturday (rain)... It's a four stroke, and I know absolutely nothing about them. Thanks.

I could use some feedback, My son is getting into off road riding so I have starting getting back into it as well.  We mostly do trail riding but did some MX track riding last year and he loved it andso did I.  I have a 2003 TTR 225, it's nice that it has an electric start but the suspension is too soft and it doesn't have enough power for my liking.  When I was riding the MX track I was having issues bottoming out on the larger jumps.  I want to change to a more off-road capable bike.   I won't ride it much and don't want to spend a lot of money, I think I prefer a 2 stroke, when I was younger, in 1990, I raced an 89 RM250 and loved it.  I am looking at a 96 RMX 250  and a 98 YZ400F, both bikes look to be in good condition and around a thousand dollars.  I like the RMX because I think kicking a 2 stroke 250 should be easier than a 4 stroke 400 and the simplicity of the 2 stroke engine.  The 400 sounds good because of the low end torque I assume it has but the cost of rebuilding the 4 stroke if needed worries me and I have heard they are hard to start. Should the RMX be decent for an occasional trip to an MX park?  Any thoughts on these two bikes?

So I have a 2008 yz450f and I would like to add some LED lights to it to make it street legal. Mainly just a headlight and a tail light and turn signals if I need to (which where I live hand signals work).
So where I need help is getting power from the stator to a battery. Wiring from a battery to anything else I got and understand and don't need help with (but recommendations are welcome). So my questions are.
What type of power is coming from the stator. AC or DC? Will I need a regulator or rectifier? How do I wire something from the stator to charge a battery? What would that wiring look like? Would this stator http://www.rickystator.com/product/stators/yamaha/yamaha-yz450f-35-watt-lighting-stator-assembly-06-09 work? Anything else I should know? Any help would be appreciated. Thank you.
