ktm buring lots of oil

i have a 2003 ktm 450 sxf. i am getting this bike used from a freind trading him for my 2004 yz250f. He ran trough a qt of oil on a 2 day moto ride. i am wondering if it needs a new piston and rings or if it is a yamaha and they need valved and the works once you crack open that top end after a few hundred hours on them. and advice would be great

I have a 2007 sx-f250 and had to replace the piston ring after 8 hours because it was burning lots of oil as well. Sometimes the rings don't seat properly during breakin. I recommend doing a "leak down" check which will tell you if it's rings or valves but it sounds like the same thing that happened to me. Once i installed the new rings, haven't had an issue since. It's a fairly cheap fix.

Check the valve guides. Mine did the same thing a few seasons ago. Guides and seals were shot. Replaced the valves w/ stainless while I was in there, new guides, and new stem seals. Runs like a champ now.
