Compartmental syndrom

Dr Mark,

My brother is having pain in his calves and was diagnosed with compartmental syndrom. The pressure readings where very high in his legs. He is going in for surgery in a couple weeks. He is in the police acadamy and does regular workouts and streches, but still has great pain when he runs.

Are there any alternatives to surgery?

The results of this surgery are really not so good. Has he tried a condtioning program, and making sure he is in the best shoes, as well as getting a running coach.

This conditon is actually just like arm pump. It usually resolves when the equiptment and technique is optimized.

Would a podiatrist help? To eliminate gait/stride problems? Orthotics?

Orthotics would be a start, but not necessarily the answer.
