Tips on cleaning exhaust components?

I removed my exhaust system to do top end motor work and repack my FMF slip-on. My question is, how do I go about cleaning the pipes properly inside and out? The inside is full of black crud due to leaky valve seals, and the outside is just the usual wear and tear and looks like crap. Any comments would be greatly appreciated!

For that black crap on the inside, brake/contact cleaner should work like a champ!

As for the outside, I don't know what to tell you, mine doesn't look so hot either.

I would use brake cleaner on the inside of the pipe and scotch brite with water or wd-40 on the outside.

A scotch brite pad works great on the header.
