Range of Jets

Recommended Posts

Greetings - I've just purchased a 2008 XR6 650 L for some dual sporting in the Olympic Mountains. This bike will augment my 2005 Yamaha WR 450 F which I ride around the logging roads behind my house.

I've read the FAQ and a bunch of articles. Could someone let me know what would be a good range of main and leak jets to purchase as I tweak the stock jetting. I've ordered the manual and will be opening up the exhaust a bit, going to a foam filter, and adding knobbies. I understand the FAQ talks about a suggestion for jet changes but I'm wondering what range might be best to order. I believe Dave's mods calls for a 55/158 starting point (without modifying the exhaust.

I also wanted to ask where is the best place online to buy jets? And does AIS make a smog removal kit for the XR 650 L?

Thanks,

Keith

Why did you choose the foam filter? I'm considering the K&N because it seems to be lower maintenance. I clean & re-oil the foam filter on my CR250 after every ride, is this same level of maintenance required for the 650 foam?

I ordered my jets from Motorcyclecarbs.com - I think Kenzo recommended this place, & the style too... anyway here's what I ordered, probably overkill but:

Remove SKU Name Price Quantity Ext. Price

681 KEIHIN MAIN JET 99101-393 #158 6.95 6.95

682 KEIHIN MAIN JET 99101-393 #160 6.95 6.95

680 KEIHIN MAIN JET 99101-393 #155 6.95 6.95

683 KEIHIN MAIN JET 99101-393 #162 6.95 6.95

679 KEIHIN MAIN JET 99101-393 #152 6.95 6.95

801 KEIHIN PILOT JET N424-26 #52 7.95 7.95

802 KEIHIN PILOT JET N424-26 #55 7.95 7.95

803 KEIHIN PILOT JET N424-26 #58 7.95 7.95

HTH..

Thanks clintp! I appreciate the part numbers. I went with a 55 pilot and a 158, 160, and 165 main. I plan on opening up my exhaust and am thinking the 165 might be the best place to start. I plan on using Dave's Mods.

I ordered the UNI foam mostly because I'm very used to foam filters on motorcycles. I'm sure the K&N will be fine. I use a K&N on my Harley. I've K&N filters on my tuned Corvette and have used K&N for years. Some think the finer dust associated with dirt bikes might make foam better. I buy that argument.

I notice you didn't buy a 165 main jet. May I ask what main jet you're currently running? And have you opened up your exhaust?

BTW I ordered Dunlap D908 rally tires in a slightly wider back 130 vs 120.

Yep, that would be cool to hook up. I'm working now to get the L dirt worthy. I also have a WR 450 F when I need some crazy fun. But the thought of riding up into the mountains is why I got the L. Please sent a PM and maybe we can do some fireroads!
