You might want to look into the ktm 950 adventure too. I have ridden my friends bmw and really it didn't seem that special to me. It was slow and bulky, not saying that the ktm isn't heavy but it carries that weight a lot better. I would look into the ktm because they are great bikes and they are cheaper than a bmer.

Well there would be a big performance difference between KTM950 adventure and the BMW 650 Dakar. In BMW format you would need to go to the 1100 RS to even be in the same league as the KTM950 IMHO and the KTM would still be stronger in performance.

KTMs are just excellent bikes and relatively good to work on but do tend to need a bit of maintenance also IMHO.

Well there is always going to be a trade off between maintenance and performance. the only question is is it worth it?
