Whats your question? If you're asking whats wrong, it sounds like you're low on compression, and that you need to get a new top end.

when you say 'hard to start' does that mean it just takes forever? or that its literally VERY hard to kick?

I have an 84 KDX and had to replace the stator, mine was very hard to start and wouldn't rev very high. The pipe was VERY Hot not just 2-stroke hot but super VERY hot. I would check the stator also. The guy I bought it off of broke the return spring and gave me a free pair of era styled boots complete with hole in the sole he put a steet metal piece through.

very rich pilot jet will do that, or if there airscrew is closed, or if the idle is turned all the way up and the bike is trying to start on the needle. a really old or dirty or "over gapped" plug may do that, float needle leaking or not seating all the way, broken reeds? thats all i can think of

It could be you have not found the right technique to starting it.

Good Luck.
