TTR 225 chain conversion

Recommended Posts

My 2002 ttr 225 has a 428 chain on it which is expensive and hard to find. I noticed that the TTR 230 have a 520 on it and I'm wondering if anyone knows if the sprockets on the 230 will fit the 225. If not doesn anyone know of a cheap place to buy chains and sprockets? Everywhere i have looked has chains for about $80 and rear sprockets for $60.

Thanks for the help.

This is an old post, but I'm researching it now, so if anyone wants the info, from what I can tell, JTF 555 for the TT-R225 http://www.jtsprockets.com/52.0.html?&L=0&sel_uid=2629&p= has the same inside measurements, discounting thickness as JTF 1554 http://www.jtsprockets.com/52.0.html?&L=0&sel_uid=6149&p=

However, the 1554 only goes to 14 teeth where the 555 goes to 15

I'm still researching the rear sprocket since JT doesn't make one for the 225, only Moose. I will post the measurements later. That one will be really interesting since at least the 225 rear sprocket has an offset.

Did you get anywhere on the rear sprocket? I found a Blaster front sprocket works for converting to 520 chain but haven't had much luck for a rear sprocket.

Nope, I totally forgot to measure the new one before I installed it. Hopefully I still have the old one and can measure everything on the hub, the teeth I can't though.

I can't edit the post above, but it appears that JT made some changes to their catologue, the links don't go to the right sprockets any more.

These are updated links:

1554: http://www.jtsprockets.com/fileadmin/Code/images/large/jtf1554.jpg

Please verify these are still correct if you click the links.

I put a TTR225 04 rear wheel on my TTR230, there is no 520 rear sprocket for the 225. So i had to covert down to the 428, I can get the offset 428 rear sprockets fairly cheap, and you can buy a front 428 sprocket for the 230. and everything seems to line up okay. But i would not go any less that than 15 tooth 428, i saw the 13 and it was 1/2 an inch smaller than the 230 14 tooth 520 sprocket.. I have to say these guys were selling 520 and 428 chains 15 dollar difference.. and the 428 was on the cheap side. They say going bigger makes you heavier and slower anyhow. So i'll see how my downsize works. Strength is supposedly 4000+lbs renthal..

Good luck.

The 04 ttr225 has a 13mm offset -dishing- to the rear sprocket/hub

The 07 TTr230 has no offset and hub lines up with the front sprocket.

When the day comes i'll probably get a new oem hub. :(

Your average person will not notice the difference between a 420,428 and 520 chain, except for how fast it wears.

The reason the 520 sprocket appears to be so much larger than the 42X sprocket is because the chain link is 25% larger. The 4 in 420 and 5 in 520 are the "pitch", which translates directly to 1/8". A 420 chain is 0.5" and a 520 chain is 5/8" or 0.625".
