Random Suzi' 400...

Recommended Posts

Hi all, total newbie to the site (and to Suzuki 4t singles, as you will soon gather!...)

The other day a mate offered me his old field bike for next to nothing so I snapped it up. Thing is, I'm having trouble identifying the thing! (I will try to get pictures as I know the thread's basically useless without before anyone says! 🙂 )

Initially I "decided" it was a "DR 400" as that's the only Suzi' letters I could think of, but since researching it a little I can't find anything like what I have. :D

Best I can do before I take pics is-: 396cc SOHC 4t air-cooled single, Gold anodised Showa USD forks, D.I.D. 18/21 wheels w/disc brakes, Pro-Link swingarm & piggyback air shock.

I will hopefully have some pics before the weekend's out, but if that rings any bells with anyone I'd appreciate the input.

Cheers, Dan.

Bo77ocks, can't get camera to speak to the PC...

So my description doesn't even hint at anything recognisable? 🙂 I'll have to try find out what's up with this b4stard camera, typical it should stop playing ball just when I need it. :D

Anyhow, got bigger fish to fry than identifying the model now - randomly just started blowing clouds of smoke out yesterday night. Possibly just a sticking ring as it's stood a while & seems to swap between smoking lightly & heavily at random, always nice to have a look inside & make sure all's well before I start spending on it anyway so the top end's coming off when the weather bucks up.

Cheers, Dan.

This just gets stranger (and confirms that it's a 'bitsa')

I've just realised that "pro-link" is a Honda system, a f@&*£!g Honda FFS!!!

So what I have then, is a Suzuki 400 engine in a Honda frame, with Suzuki DR tank (that fits straight on!) & feck knows what other bits.

Oh well, saves me from having to stick to O/E parts I suppose. 🙂

Just wonder now why no-one took the time to point out the Honda suspension to me, I'd have thought at least someone knew that out there & now you've missed the oppurtunity for a good old fashioned flame session 'cause I realised it for myself. :D

So no-one talks to newbies then? Not even ones with wierd bikes (not to mention the head... 🙂 )

Camera's still not playing ball, got the frame/engine number (one and the same, 597334) so I'll be off down the Suzuki dealer tomorrow to see if they can shed any light...

Cheers.

You'll likely get more responses on Monday. I want to see this amalgamation. I have no illuminating input for you. Good luck.

Hmm, sorry to anyone if I seemed a bit snappy there - have a chest infection which means I don't get more than an hour sleep at a time. No excuse, apologies... 🙂

Well I've had the top end down the local Suzuki place today & it turns out to be a 80/81ish DR400S lump, fitted into the Suzi cradle also. Front & back ends are most likely Honda XR although that's not going to be too important for the minute as the suspension's pretty good & I need to do some "minor" engine work.

The piston is marked as +.10 & seems OK though the bore is worn, has a small scratch & is nicely glazed too, top pair of rings have a gap of over 1.5mm although the oil scraper's good.

I've not looked too hard yet but no-one seems to list any more oversize kits (hardly surprising given the age) although I can get standard genuine parts, but that would require me to find a NOS barrel I suppose. I reckon what I'll do for the moment is have a word with my engine specialist & see if he can find some suitable rings, if he comes up trumps then I'll just have him hone the barrel & chance it with new rings to see if that at least brings smoke to an acceptable level.

(Oh boy, I thought this would be fun - just didn't realise quite how much fun... :worthy: ) Still struggling with camera too so no laughter just yet, for those who so wish. :D

[update=not so good]

Went down my local engine specialist (EMS Crewe, 07983 976 020) & got a second opinion, Notwithstanding the fact that my ".10" piston is actually a 1.0 that I misread in my haste & hence the max. oversize anyway, there's been a little butchery going on in that there lump...

What Dave (the engineer) reckons is that it's had a bodged rebore not long ago as the piston (genuine Suzuki no less, and virtually unmarked) is a bit of a piss fit in the barrel. This & the bike standing around/then being run hard, would probably account for the bad glazing/wear marks in the barrel.

Anyway, it looks like I'm in the market for a cheap-but-running DR350-650 motor or a similar sized XR lump, exhaust & an oil tank. Dave, to his credit, has lightly honed the barrel for the moment to hopefully cut down the smoke to make the thing ridable & I'm going to throw it back together & blat round the fields on this lump till it shits the piston, by which time I'll have hopefully acquired a replacement. Either way I've decided not to let the bike as a whole die, I will be keeping the bastard-child Suzuki cradle & Honda suspension as it's quite a nice ride from the few circuits I've had on it & I aint the sort of person to throw away something that has obviously taken hours and hours of someone elses time, blood & money just 'cause the engine's Fubar'ed.... 🙂 Crazy, yes that's me! :D
