Cleaning out a used fuel tank?

I purchased a replacement used fuel tank but it looks like its been sitting with the petcock hole open for some time. What would be the best way to clean this unit out?

is it gunked up? if so I cleaned my old fuel tank with 100% simple green.

I let it sit for about a week to.

I would recommend the Kreem kit. It can be sold, or at least ordered from most bike shops. Gets rid of rust, gunk, and most everything else.

Would diesel fuel or parts solvent be an effective cleaner? Would it damage the plastic in any way?

Mineral spirits or diesel, a couple thousand BB's and shake generously. If it's really rusty, start with some pea gravel. Then go to the BB's. After that, go with some soapy water. Then dry completely with compressed air. Be sure to run an in-line fuel filter. HTH c good

Nothing to rust, so no. Is it just dust etc inside or is there some gunky residue from old gas? If its just dusty/dirty I'd just fill it up with soapy water.

No, if it is plastic and just has dirt inside, clean it out with a garden hose and soap and water.
