Ideal Modifications for a new crf450x

Recommended Posts

So guys...................................

Lubeking here. Just out of the blocks(had to get an Olympic pun in).

TT newcomer and recently soiled virgin.

2007 stock machine just with the wrapping paper off.

In your eyes, what mods would make the ideal trail machine?

I am not competing, I live in Southern Spain. It's hot, stoney, dry, and I will be riding between 2,000 feet 5,000 feet altitude. The humidity levels are low.

I need reliability, rather than 'balls in hands ' madness. But and small performance mods may be worth taking note.

I now have all the info I need on jetting and tires......... What about the rest of that stuff.

Educate me please!

I look forward to hearing from you Stateside pranksters.

Cheers

A Brit in Spain aka Lubeking:ride:

First thing i would do is get your suspension dialed in for your weight and riding style and the type of terrain you ride.

heavier flywheel, lower gearing, skid plate, radiator guards, hand guards and disc protectors

for performance: open the airbox and intake, re-jet, do muffler mods, disable the smog pump and install an R cam if you're still hungry for power

here's info on some of the stuff i mentioned:

Hi Ivan CRF

Thanks for all your feedback so far.

Why the heavier fly wheel??

Why the lower gearing???

Skid plate I get!

What kind of Rad guards??

I've been told Acerbis Pro Bush Guards are best.

Scott disk protectors???

No Smog pump in this neck of the woods.

Re-jet via JD??

Muffler Mods???

Open Air box???

Intake???

Reckon no need for R cam.

P.S. Although I need reliability, I don't ride like a *****. Just saying..........................

Cheers

1. you may want a heavier flywheel and lower gearing so you don't stall in technical terrain.

2. i have the unabiker rad guards and i like them very much. the rooster rad guards are good for side protection though. i hear good things about the flatlands too

3. some people like the crfsonly shark fin because the lower end is replaceable. but anything will be better than the stock plastic shroud.

4. i re-jetted via JD and am very happy :D

5. muffler mods ---> http://www.thumpertalk.com/forum/showthread.php?t=485782&page=3

6. opening the air box ---> http://www.thumpertalk.com/forum/showthread.php?t=670993

7. for intake you can go with the twin air power flow backfire resistant filter so that you can remove the restrictive backfire screen.

8. cam info if you're interested: http://www.thumpertalk.com/forum/showthread.php?t=633087&highlight=Cams

* the 450X has been extremely reliable for me. be sure to keep up on maintenance and you'll have no problems... before i forget, make sure you run a full quart of tranny oil too!

:)
