CDI interchangeability

Recommended Posts

I've got a couple old hondas. 1983 xr500 and a 1986 xl600. Both of which I would like to pick up an extra cdi (when I run into a good deal).

The previous owner said that his son had used the cdi from the xl600 for a while to run a Fatcat (yeah... a Yamaha).

So I've run into a few cdi's that have the same plug setup. I'm assuming that at least some will interchange.

Does anybody have any more defendant info on interchangeability. I think that I'll probably get a better deal asking for a newer part. As soon as I ask for a cdi for a bike that's as old as mine I'm sure any parts guy is going to see dollar signs!

Most of the CDI units from 86 on have a simular physical appearance and all of the off road bikes with CDI ignition use a dedicated stator winding to power the CDI unit but Honda lists different part numbers for the various models and years. I've heard of people interchanging units but I've been reluctant to try so I've bought model/year specific units when needed.
