Weight of 2008 250X (11 lbs heavier?)

Recommended Posts

The 2008 according to honda Specs is 253 lbs with 1.9 gallon (full tank).

From http://powersports.honda.com/motorcycles/off-road/model.asp?ModelName=CRF250X&ModelYear=2008&ModelId=CRF250X8

"253 lbs (Includes all standard equipment, required fluids and a full tank of fuel—ready to ride)"

I have a 2004 250x. The owners manual said 236 lbs. I put it on the scale, with 1 gallon ready to ride, and it was....... 236 lbs. I was surprised they were so .....honest.

With about 1 gallon more fuel in it (6 lbs) the 2008 seems to weigh 11 lbs more than the '04. (253-6=247 lbs). Does anyone know why the 2008 is 11 pounds heavier?

Thanks!

Tom

If you use the Honda comparison web app, the '07 250X is 225 pounds and the '08 250X is 253 pounds, so they are obviously measuring something different. There wouldn't be a 28 pound difference from one year to the next.

And why on Earth would Honda cut the tank down to 1.9 gallons?! 2.2 gallons was small already! I have to carry extra gas when I want to do more than 50 miles in tight, hilly, technical riding...just so I feel comfortable!

07 measured dry...08 measured fully gassed and ready to ride.

The 2007 is weighed "dry" at 225 lbs and the 2008 is weighed "wet, ready to ride, full tank" at 253 lbs. 28 lbs difference.

Adding 1.9 gallons (1.9gal=12 lbs) of fuel to the 2007 makes 237 lbs. Does anyone know where the other 16 lbs came from? (225+12+16=253)

differences on the specs: 08 & 07

Compression Ratio 12.9:1 12.5:1

Rake 27.54 degrees 27.9 degrees

Trail 118 mm (4 inches) 118 mm (4.7 inches)

Ground Clearance 13.4 inches 13.6 inches

Seems like the 07 is better except for compression.

I wish there were a standard that every manufacturer were held to when giving these sort of measurements.

me to! I'm still trying to figure out how the 08 could be heavier. I would imagine with the smaller tank the 08 would be lighter.

they also have a bunch of emissions crap on the newer models, maybe different tires or tubes?

The only emissions crap on 'um is the AIS. The one off my WR (mikuni)weighed just under 1 lb all together (air valve, exhaust port metal tube, hoses and clamps). I doubt the honda system weighs any more. Its insignificant :)

They could have added some more internal baffling to the exhaust. Maybe some internal engine parts weigh more than previous years :D

The smaller tank baffles me. Its an off road bike for crying out loud. Centralizing the mass and making the bike feel thinner between the knees don't mean shit if you run out of gas in the middle of nowhere:busted:

If you really weighed yours at 237 lbs, then I believe your scale was wildly inaccurate, since that's nowhere close to the weights i've seen in the magazines that actually weigh the bikes with everything except gas.

I recently rode my dad's DR-Z400 with a MASSIVE 47 gallon tank (okay, probably more like 4.5 gallon tank) and it felt like that helped carry momentum through corners. I'm sure it was the fact that the bike is completely different than my 250X, but it sure seemed like the higher mass of that tank carried more momentum through the corner. :worthy:

12 lbs of gas makes sense but a CRF250X carrying 16 lbs of other fluids does not make sense. To give an example of 16 lbs of water, a 24 case of beer weighs 18 lbs, or if it was petrol, that size would weigh 14 lbs.

So I went to a dealer and weighed a bone-stock, NEW 2007 CRF250X with 2.2 gal tank full, ready to ride. I used a calibrated scale. Rear wheel 133 lbs. Front wheel 120 lbs.

133+120=253, same as Honda claims for the 2008 CRF250X (1.9gal full tank, ready to ride). Not sure how Honda got the 225lbs figure in 2007 literature.

This dealer did not have a 2008 on the floor that day or I would have weighed it too.

I've wondered about this forever too. It seems that dry to wet weight differences are always in the range of 25 pounds. My XR400 was speced at 257 - I weighed it with a gallon of gas at 289. My GasGas 125 weighed in at 235 with no gas (but including guards), and it is speced at somewhere around 208 dry. Even with oil and all of the suspension fluids, I don't come anywhere near 25 pounds. Maybe "dry weights" are not only without fluids, but without tires/tubes too.
