Your best options, considering the money of course, would be to (1) change the rear sprocket, and then (2) go for the pipe & muffler/

.................seriously!

I plan on doing some upgrades to my XT over the late fall, after my warranty wheel wobble is dealt with. (rim isn't true, tire is fine)

my list............

1. Block off the exhaust air injection system and remove it.(potential for vacuum leaks greatly reduced as the bike ages)

2. Add a Teikei 140 main jet

3. Add pre-filters in the top of the box (or find a larger snorkel and enlarge the snorkle hole)

4. Drill out the restrictive baffle. (I haven't seen ANY aftermarket exhausts for this bike yet!)

5. Using a foam filter from the aftermarket, make a flat oiled foam filter to replace the paper one. (paper and water crossings don't mix)

My question to you about gearing is this...............

just how much of a walking pace are you looking for that you think the bike is geared too high?

1st gear seems soooo low to me that the bike could pull out tree stumps!

Like to know what you mean by pipe and muffler? There is no aftermarket pipes or mufflers for it yet. You could get something and modify it to fit. Then you have to re-jet if you can find anything. So far I can only find mains for the carb....no pilots. As for the sprocket the rear is the same as a 88-90 FZR400.

I totally agree with Royalbill the gearing is not low enough for real trail ridding. While in first gear with the XT's clutch lever out the slowest the thing will go is about 6-8mph. I would like it to go approximately 4-5mph and have some grunt if needed. Has anyone changed the rear sprocket on their XT? If so what type of low speed in first and high speed in 5th do you see now.
