XR400 Oil Use

Does anyone else have oil use issues with there XR400. Mine runs perfect never smokes but uses a Quart in about 300 miles. After new Honda rings and stem seales, it practicly stoped for a couple thousand miles, but then started again. Does anyone know of a good after market ring that will fit the stock Honda piston? Help Thanks

How oily is the soot in the tailpipe?

If you are not dripping oil on the ground it has to being burnt in the combustion process.

Did you put new rings on an old piston or did you mic the bore and go to an oversized piston?

Did you get the ring end gap set right?

Did you place the ring gap in the correct orientation?

Mine hasn't used a drop since I bought it 10 years ago. But, I do 100-150 mile oil changes.

Nope.

I have three XR4's, one with over 20,000 miles on original engine parts.

Never used a drop of oil or needed a valve adjustment.

Lots of road riding or even fast long fireroads with the motor running in the higher rpms can cause the oil to foam up a little and blow it out the crankcase breather hose. Not really a problem except you need to add oil every once in a while.

My 96 250 is bored to 277 and will really run down the oil level after a 40 mile sprint on the road at 55 mph running 13or14 and 48 sprockets, a 15 front on a 400 should help to keep the RPMs down.
