Oil Burning

Recommended Posts

Once in a while, when I start my 1984 XL 600R, it will burn oil. It does not do this all the time, just once in a while. Otherwise, when she is running, there is no smoke at all. What would cause this?

It could be leaky valve guide seals. Oil runs down the valve stems when shut down, and burns off at startup. It could be they're just starting to fail, which is why you don't get it every time.

Not a particularly difficult fix, if you're handy enough to remove / reinstall the cylinder head by yourself. Although, come to think of it, you might not even NEED to pull the head. Perhaps you can access the seals with just removing the head cover. Not sure on a 600. My only experience is on pre-RFVC 500s.
