rusty tank on xl600r

my tank is rotten with rust,i tried to clean it with CLR and heavy duty industrial parts cleaner.It cleaned it a little bit but not much,ther is still lots of rust tho.Im also wondering if a late 80,s xr tank would fit my xl600r.Did any body have the same problem as me if so tell how you cleaned the rust from the tank.Appericiate some advice!.

Try a box of bb's and some solvent. Tape the openings and shake away! Worked on my old XJ750's tank.

You can also use KREEM, which is an excellent product.

I agree with martinfan30, but you may also want to see if some local shops/ salvage yards clean tanks, it's probably a good idea to check on the costs of both.

If the simpler methods don't work do some searches on "electrolytic rust removal." Just get it as clean as you can and install a small paper element filter between the tank and the carb.

A trick i do to old badly rusted tanks is like Martinfan.. But I use pea gravel,navel jelly and a little water.Then seal it with duct tape, wrap it in a big old bed sheet put that in a box and let it tumble in a dryer on fluff for about an hour. Wash it out with water then a little 2-stroke oil and gas as a final wash.

Unfortunately I think that the answer is no. The mounting is different enough that I know Clarke makes a model that fits only the XL600R and XL350R.

ask the guys at www.justgastanks.com maybe they have something that will fit, I think an XR600 plastic tank should do the trick.

Don't use the rust remover from eastwoodco.com does nothing.
