Dirty Radiator

Recommended Posts

Did a search on this topic and didn't see anything. I know dirt is an insulator. Anyone or any articles on just how much of a temperature difference, if any, there might be between a clean radiator and one that is running in dusty conditions where the fins are coated with dust? As a practice, I have always flushed my radiator fins with lots of water after riding.

I doubt there is any data regarding how much a layer of dust effects the heat rejection of a radiator. To test the effects would require calorimeter testing that isn't readily available. The only one's I know of are the OEM radiator manufacturers and quite frankly they don't give a shit about our dirt bikes! Besides, there isn't anything you can do about it as your riding. Clean them when you get home and call it good.

Thanks. Just curious. It can get really hot and humid here in MS and thought it might be worth the effort to flush them at the track or trail.
