DR400 oil level... just checking

Recommended Posts

Stupid question 👍 but can anyone confirm that to get the correct oil level on a '79 DR400S it has to be vertical (i.e. sat on a box/centrestand)

I'd assume it's the same as the later 350's as much else about the lump seems to be... (and pretty much any other bike I've known with an oil window has to be)

Cheers, Dan.

Yeah, what I thought really. Even if it had to be on sidestand that would mean my level was low & hence not (as I hoped) causing smoke due to overfilling.

Just a stab in the dark as the bike seems to smoke more when I top the oil up. (also smokes a lot for 5 min when you start from cold, then goes away until fully hot when it comes back with a vengeance.)

I'll be getting new H/G & stem seals soon anyway, see if that sorts things & while it's stripped I might as well measure the rings up too as wiseco do loads of different sizes & generally cost £26 for a set of 81mm as opposed to Suzuki's £120-odd for 1mm over genuine parts!!! 👍
