Stock Silencer, wire mesh, do I need it?

Just went to re-pack silencer on 01 YZ125 that had the original packing still in it. Used a razor blade to cut through the packing and cut right through the wire mesh screen that was wraped around the perforated tube.

Cleaned everything up and got out my new FMF 2-stroke packing and wraped the tube. I was thinking that it was going to be harder to insert the tube with packing but there was plenty of room.

Wire screen was saturated with oil but still could be used if I clean it in gasoline. This would allow for a tighter fit into the silencer can.

Do I need the wire mesh screen or should I just get more packing? Or is the loose packing good enough?

The packing lasts longer if it is packed in place.

I woudl nto worry much abotu the mesh. It could stop it from blowing out too soon, but its bette rto repack more frequently.

Do you need more than 1 packing kit to do a stock Yamaha silencer.

I used FMF mat type that was made for 2 strokes. I don't think I rolled it too tightly. It was just real easy to fit back into the can.

I usually jam as much as I can into it. Really, it does not matter much. 1 pack is enough for two strokes.
