I have a YZ465!

Recommended Posts

I secured this beast of a motor, but it needs to be re-bulit of course.

I've heard a YZ490 top-end will bolt to it, is this true?

Should I re-built the 465 top? What would YOU do?

Thanks guys!

Rebuild the 465 top end, you'll have plenty of power and none of the associated problems the 490's had like jetting and pinging problems that required head modifications to solve.

Get a Pro Form pipe and silencer from www.maicoonly.com. They are completely different shaped from the stock system and clean up the jetting. Also, install a VForce 2 or 3 rad valve system from an old 2 stroke Yamaha Phazer. The rad valve bolts right into place with no modifications. Those were the two things that helped most when I had my 465. Good luck they are great bikes!

Ya, I would stay with 465 parts.

Put Wiseco stuff in mine. No problems.

This is a very good bike. I race mine in motocross and hare scrambles.

I have yet to let a Maico 490 beat me!

These guys are great! Tell them Dave Meek sent you.

Yes it can be done , did this about 12 years ago but used a 465 bottom end in a 490 frame useing the 490 carb, top end & exhaust. I would leave it orignal and keep it 465, as they say theres plenty of power with the 465.

good luck

Mark

Just curious what the benefits of using the 465 bottom on your 490?

The 465 had a 6 speed trans, the 490 had 4. I could do 3rd gear starts on mine at Indian Dunes in 1980. That bike had plenty of power but it was like a 250 on steroids with the midrange hit!
