ex400 Oil Cooler Installation

Recommended Posts

My 1mm overbored high compression piston and hot cams have been dropped into my bfp, and now am just waiting for finishing touches to ride. (Hopefully tomorrow.)

I picked up an ex400 oil cooler to help with keeping these piston rings from frying (unlike the stockers that were fused to the piston.) I've read through a few posts that showed different mounting positions. I'm keen to mount on the lower left front of the engine case. Does anyone have a walkthrough on mounting it and/or have a list of necessary bits to get it mounted?

Thnx.

tough to mount that cooler its a bit long and cant really tuck in behind anything, running on outside is definitely up to you and id just put it in the safest spot you think. Dont think i can remember anyone adding the 400ex cooler but one has one similar under front light in front of the plastic

Afternoon, I haven't any overheating problems at all, i have a fan off a something roadbike with a thermostate it works exellent. Oil temp never goes above 160/170, I haven't ridden it the extreme heat yet (sill winter over here). It was easy to fit just mount + cut oil return line, connect fittings (standard sizes) and thats it. Here are some more pic"s http://i302.photobucket.com/albums/nn107/Pikkos21/Picture073.jpg http://i302.photobucket.com/albums/nn107/Pikkos21/Pic_0313_160.jpg http://i302.photobucket.com/albums/nn107/Pikkos21/Pic_0313_158.jpg http://i302.photobucket.com/albums/nn107/Pikkos21/Pic_0313_159.jpg http://i302.photobucket.com/albums/nn107/Pikkos21/Pic_0313_157.jpg

Pikkos,

this thread was more about the 600 & 650L airheads BUT i'm curious wut ur oil temps were before u added the oil cooler?

and u gave me a great idea for the guard material if i install the cooler on my L 👍

Research Rat,

do a little "research" by searching "oil cooler" here in the XR600/650 forum and u'll see several mounting ideas for ur cooler.

TIA,

kenny

I didn't know anyone else used that perforated sheet. 👍 It is definitely tough stuff, but don't use it to build a header shield. I found out the hard way that it doesn't flex enough when the header is hot and it will eventually break one of the mounting points off. :worthy:
