Athena 290 rings

Recommended Posts

Has anybody done a topend on their athena 290 lately. I just did the other night. The oil ring is about half the size of the one I took out. The old one filled the ring slot perfectly it was a big brass looking unit. the new one is half the width and flimsy...

Maybe they changed their piston? Any info would be helpful. I threw back in the old rings but now it looks like it's blowing smoke out. Not happy to say the least.

mark,

sounds like you need to do some parts numbers checking.

like maybe the number off the piston kit to the ring set?

i had always heard you were a smoke blower, but now even you are saying it!!! :worthy:👍:busted:

Either way there should only be a few thou side clearance between the ring and the groove. If there is more than that, something is wrong. If the groove width is .100" for example, the assembled oil ring should be around .097" thick.
