470 loosing OIL

Recommended Posts

My 470 built by the man

seems to be needing oil after a couple rides

seems like after a 100 miles there is just a bitof oil on the dipstick

I add just a little more ,,about the length of the dipstick not alot ,just enough to reach the top line

Dont see any oil stains on the ground no visable signs of a leak,,but a riding buddy did say he smelt a bit of oil while riding

any suggestions ?

Think you have to pull your cylinder to check this.

Should also check the valves, it can be done at the same time.

BUT IF YOUR'E SMART... Get som second opinions,as I'm no guru...:D

I have checked the valves and they were in spec

that was a couple thousand miles ago

Any other suggestions would be great

I will check for blockages in the oil return box

Most likely is the rings if there are no signs of leakage or clogged (pesky bugs!) breather. But higher than typical consumption is not a issue to immediately worry about. If you add less than a quart between 1,000 mile oil changes, then it is more of a inconvience than a pressing problem. Perhaps, in the dead of winter, a light ball honing and fresh rings may keep you out of mischief.

What weight oil are you using?

What procedure are you using to check the level?
