16 tooth front for an L model? Primary reduction ratio? Redline?

Recommended Posts

New here, great forum by the way, the XRL is new to me as I've been into the Vmax thing for years and am now branching out.

I've searched and can't find a defintive answer.

I'm riding the L about 90% highway and would like to go to a 16 tooth front sprocket; if it will fit and is made......

I live in Houston, commute on it often, and would like the bike to be relaxed at 80 mph so I don't get run over.......

I've already gone to a 42 tooth rear, which is the smallest I can find in back in a steel sprocket, I would have just gone with a smaller in back if I could have found one in steel but couldn't

I found one post where some one said they were doing that but the part # they listed was for a 530 chain?????

Does anyone make a 520 chain front sprocket for the L?

Will it fit under my XR's only case saver? or fit at all?

Will it cause undue front chain guide/slider wear?

Where should I look for one, I've done the easy stuff already searching all the suppliers I can find on the internet.

Also;

I've searched the forum for the primary reduction ration and have seen it quoted as both 2.209 as as well as 2.029

Which is correct for the L?

It's a 2003

One other thing, does anyone know what the redline is on this thing, and also what is an acceptable highway cruise RPM for long life, I could possibly be taking this thing on 200 mile plus trips and don't wanna kill it....which I hear is pretty tough to do but still?

Thanks in advance for any help,

Rusty

1.) The "530" part had to have been a typo. The stock chain is a 520. Bikes like the CBR600 use a 530 which has the same pitch as a 520, but is wider.

2.) Possibly. Like martinfan30 said, just expect it and keep an eye on wear.

3.) The manual lists the primary(crank to clutch) reduction as 2.029.

4.) Redline is 7500rpm. I would try to keep the rpm below 4500 if I could. Actually, the rev limiter is 7500; the actual power band starts to fall off at least 1000rpm before that.

In the FAQ is a part number for a 16 tooth C/S sprocket.

The sliders may wear a little more from the 42, but just consider them expendable.

Welcome to TT!

Rich.

Thank you both!

The FAQ section is where I had found that before saying it was a 530.

I sent them an email to verify and hadn't heard back yet.

At 2.029 I think I'm spinning at about 4400 at 75 with a 15/42 set-up, if that's ok I may just leave it alone and buy a 14 tooth front for the trails.

Thanks again,

Rusty

The 16 tooth front is a yamaha part number:

Sprocket Specialists part number 514x-16

I have been running my 16 tooth front for a while on my sm'd setup and absolutely love it. Just a note if you opt for the sprocket you will need to use a clip as the sprocket is not drilled and is way to tough to waste the time to drill it. I slapped a 24 mm clip on and could not be happier.

Could you post the link to where you saw that in the FAQ?

........OK........

I see where I screwed up, I left out the "X" in the part number in doing the search on Sprocket Specialist website.......

I found it now and your all correct the 514x-16 does say 520 chain.

Their website isn't very user friendly since the model search doesn't really list every thing that fits the bike, but mostly it was my fault.

Thanks for steering me in the right direction.

Does anyone know if this thing will clear my XR's only case saver? if not I may just "take a little meat" off the case saver to make it fit.

Thanks again

Rusty

I'd like to put a 16 tooth on my dominator. Am I right in thinking the splines are the same on that engine? Was reading through https://www.thumpertalk.com/forum/archive/index.php/t-674458.html and found the part number http://www.sprocketspecialists.com/ProductDetails.aspx?productID=15704 and c-clip retaining method. Guessing I'd have to trim my cover though.
