Broken ankles w/X-rays, prognosis?

Recommended Posts

2-1/2 months ago, I broke both ankles overjumping a 70' tabletop and flatlanding hard about 85' out from around 20' up. Both talus bones are broken among others. My left ankle took the worst of it and received surgery two weeks after after the incident when the major swelling was down a little. At six weeks out, I started to put weight on my better right leg in hope of getting around on crutches and out of a wheelchair. Now, at 10 weeks, I'm in a fracture boot and still can't make it more than a lap around my living room in severe pain using the right leg with crutches. On my left leg, the extra pins have just been pulled and I'm in a fracture boot on that side too now with prescribed total immobilization and no weight bearing on it for another six weeks.

Dr. Mark, could you please take a look at my before and after surgery X-rays and let me know if I should be trying to walk on my right leg or why it still hurts so much after 12 weeks. On my shattered left side ankle, what do you think your prognosis would be for my recovery. What functionality might I lose and what kind of timetable might I be looking at. My ultimate goal is to get back on the bike again. I'm no kid anymore, I'm 46 and know this won't be easy.

Typical Florida work.

The left side is falling apart. The distal talus fragment has rotated. This either needs to be redone now, or wait some time and do a subalar and talonavicular fusion.

My choice would be to repositon the bones in their correct positon.

The right side is ok
