What is a shift fork

I hear all these people discussing shift forks? Is that a regular maintenance thing? Am i that out of it. Is this just an issue on some of the newer ones

Shift forks are part of the gearbox that basically look like a fork with two prongs which move a sleeve which selects your gears.

Have a look down the bottom of this page and they're in plain view with big green arrows. http://www.gadgetjq.com/transmission.htm

I lost 3rd gear on my yz...had to replace the 3rd gear , 4th gear and a shiftfork. No they are not a maintenence thing, when they wear out or bend you`ll know it. and it will be very expensive and a real pain in the ##s!

+1 on the explanation. No they arent regular maintenance and yess they suck to replace. When you replace a fork, look real close at the dogs that engage the driven gear and make sure they are square and sharp. If not, replace the gear too, or you will be splitting the cases yet again. Another less than fun project.

As they said no maintenance required. Shouldn't be too much of problem unless like me you are going over a log and hit hard and simultaneously jam your foot down on the shifter accidentally, causing the fork to jump off somehow and you can't shift above second.
