Need a gear between 2nd and 3rd

Lately when I've been riding, the trails don't seem fast enough for 3rd but not slow enough for 2nd. What gearing do you guys suggest? Should I make the gears shorter or should I make them taller. What front/rear sprocket combo do you suggest?

Since 1st gear is almost unusable in most situations since it is so low, I would gear the bike taller. If you are riding really tight woods though, then I would gear it shorter to shorten the gears as that would allow you to have the RPM's right where you want them to be.

i race enduros so i run 2nd and 3 rd alot. i race stock front and 52 or 53 on the back. the top speed for the bike will be slower, but not too bad. but remember i rev the piss out of my bike. i hope this is helpful for you.

I run stock front 53 rear and seem to be having the same problem. was looking for 54 rear but not able to find one so i'm thinking about dropping 1 tooth in front. May have to take a link out of the chain to keep the wheelbase short to help turning on tight trails

Thanks for the info guys. What is the stock gearing though? front/rear? I think 2nd and 3rd should both be a little faster for what I ride so what should I change? should I go up a tooth in the rear and down one in the front?

Lots of guys drop to a 13T front sprocket. Cheap way also.

that's what i did. it works well but I would like to run a 13/52 or 13/51 but that requires chain mods or a new chain. you can get away with just running the the 13T in front without changing the stock chain.

but it tends to be TOO SHORT in my opinion(13/53=4.07 final! stock is 14/53 which is 3.78 final).

personal preference, but I'd gear up not down. 14/51. stock is 14/53. that'll work with the stock chain and give you that tweener 2.5 gear running in second.

Here is a small table of ratios combinations. I've been trying to figure out what I should run.... but I have kind of unique issue with the 19" rim on the back, its geared much higher with it.

I think I would like to be slightly lower than stock, then forget about 1st and run 2nd, 3rd and 4th. First is very low. This is my first Enduro type bike, I kind of miss the close ratio MX transmission. It was like having half gears, it was easy to keep the engine right in the powerband.

I'm using the 13/52 combo right now. Used the 13/53 combo for almost a year, but it was a little too low.

If the engine is running right, it'll pull the 2nd to 3rd gear shift with ease. I find the stock gearing to be just about perfect for racing. I'd look into performance mods instead of changing sprockets.

The problem, for me anyway, with gearing down and making 1st gear pretty much useless. Fine on paper, just use 2nd or 2rd instead? But in riding when scrubbing off speed, braking hard going into somehthing tight or technicle I'm toe tapping the down shift into low gear without regard of where I'm at gear wise, I want the result to be a gear that I can use, not end up in a useless 1st gear. But that's just me, everyone's situation is different.

maybe a lower gear might be better to have then having top speed. i think going to a 13 front may get more closer. I also think that maybe a 13 front will be to low so a change to the rear sprocket may need to be done

I'm might be wrong but a smaller sprocket would make me think that all the gears would be a little slower. 3rd more like 2.5 and so on. I might be wrong, but I just wanted a little reasurance before I continue with the 14/51 combo.

It's around $20 for a front sprocket. Just try a 13T.

actually, the smaller the rear sprocket the less rpm necessary for a certain speed. for example, a 53 tooth rear will require more rpm than a 51 rear at a given speed.

I'm going with a 13/51 setup. this should give me a ratio of 3.92 vs. 3.78, so I will get better gearing with little expense of the top end.
