HID drz400sm

Recommended Posts

Just curious, anyone using one of those HID light kits from the advertising in this forum. They have them priced down to 80 dollars, sounds like a pretty cheap mod for what you get. As long as it's a quality product and I figure the H4 (Which I believe is our light) is a pretty standard bulb in motorcycles, it could always be used later on for another. Wondering how many of you are running HID and what you think. Ever had any trouble with it from Johnny Law or have a ballest failure..

Thanks

Jason

Running high beam as hid in my acerbis cyclops.

Very narrow beam, much light in a small area, not very useful. Going off soon.

Most retrofit lamps has wrong center in the bulb ,causing very poor light distribution.

Hid (retrofit) works best in larger reflectors.

Thanks for the photos, I understand that the cyclops isn't very bright in factory form, that definately looks brighter. I think I going to stick with the stock housing, or maybe on the acerbis lights that still houses an H4. I remember a video of someone with HID in stock housing and it was incredible.

thanks again

Jason

If you keep your stock housing ,or similar, the hid would be a good upgrade

Also just FYI, for much less money the new Sylvannia Silverstar Ultra bulbs just can't be beat. I replaced mine many months ago with one, and it provides much more light and more importantly more light thrown to the sides of the road as well with no more current draw than stock. And the ultra series don't have the blue tint to them, it's nice and white. Cost me $25. I'll try and get some pics maybe over the weekend for you.

HPIGUY, what is the wattage on that? I talked to the PIAA rep at dealer expo and he recommended their 100/80w bulb, said it was awesome for the DRZ. If I can just ad that and not jack around with servos reflectors, ballasts and such woohoo. Everything else I have is LED and I have Eddie's Big Battery so I should be fine.

It's standard wattage Goebz, I think it's 60/55w. I too have heard good things about the PIAA bulbs, but I've also been warned about hotter bulbs both producing more heat on the housing and having more current draw on an already anemic electrical system. That's why I didn't go that route myself.

Well from what I understand the baja designs HID is the real deal. It is not cheap but is worth it. H I D is High Intensity Discharge The bulb has no filaments and the light arc is created by two electrodes. To get this you have to have a Ballasts.

I have the PIAA HID in the stock housing. And it does improve the lighting by much! I can say the DR-Z has a brighter and better headlight than my car! It lights well but the glass housing make the light look yellow and not white or blue.. I dont know the wattage and dont have the bike for now.. Will get it in a day or two and if still needed i can put up some pics.
