XR500 front sprocket question.

Recommended Posts

I'm in the process of converting a 1980 XR500 to a dual purpose bike.

Along with lighting, tires, brakes and chain, I'm replacing front and rear sprockets. When I went to remove the front sprocket, I saw that it had a bit of loose play. It looks like this is a normal situation. The sprocket splines onto the output shaft and a locking plate fits over the sprocket and is held in place by two bolts. Is this "floating sprocket" normal? There's no sign of wear or damage, but I just want to be certain that the previous owner didn't put some odd sprocket off another bike.

Thanks,

Joe

If I'm remembering correctly, that's the way they are on the '79-'82 XL/XR500s as well as the 250s.
