Can one see cartlidge in an X-ray?

Recommended Posts

I was finally able to get my knees x-rayed and will have to wait 2 more weeks to see the doc but I am just curious.

When I look at the x-rays I can only ever so slightly even make out what I think is the meniscus pads. Aside from that faint clue my knee caps look like they are floating in space. None of the tendons or anything show up.

Is that normal?

I ask because the doc mentioned he cold feel grittiness under my right knee (feels like crunching to me) and also mentioned patella (something) syndrome from it not sliding through its channel evenly. I assumed I would be able to see 'something' aside from bone in the x-rays.

You can't see cartlage on on a knee X-ray. When its not there you can see the bone on bone and infer its absence.
