Utah, turn signals now required...here's the state code

Recommended Posts

I have been doing the research to get my WR street legal. I was under the assumption I did not need turn signals. I found the state code referring to motorcycle required equipment 41-6a-1506 ( http://le.utah.gov/~code/TITLE41/htm/41_06a150600.htm ). This code does not address motorcycles needing turn signals. I have heard both ways, you need them you don’t need them, but no one could show me the proof. So, I contacted my local vehicle inspector, who told me they recently changed the requirements for turn signals. He referred me to the Utah Highway Patrol. I spoke with someone in the inspection department (801-965-4889) and found the following; In an addition to the required equipment code 41-6a-1506, he referred to 41-6a-1601 ( http://le.utah.gov/~code/TITLE41/htm/41_06a160100.htm ). This code adopts the federal code CFR 571.108 subsection S5.1.1.25 ( http://edocket.access.gpo.gov/cfr_2003/octqtr/49cfr571.108.htm ), which requires motorcycles manufactured after Jan 1, 1973, to have turn signals. Most inspectors did not know of this code, and have recently been told they have to follow it. So there you have it!

I just made my CRF450X street legal a couple weeks ago. The guy who inspected mine told me in advance that blinkers were required now. I only did rear blinkers, I hope thats good enough.

:) From what I have read in other forums Utah will cite us Colo guys for no turn signals even tho they are not required in our state.

Why I will still go to the Moab area to ride I see it as being less friendly and will also consider other areas for vacations and more importantly spending my vacation dollars. The state and tax base will loose more money if I go to another state to ride than they will ever get from the OHV sticker. Trying to make the little guy pay for a pissing match between the states isn't the right way to handle it IMHO.

The second code he referred you to, 41-6a-1601, excludes motorcycles unless specifically mentioned otherwise. And the federal code and subsection it adopts merely refers to the size of a motorcycle turn signal and not the requirement of one. Utah has updated code 41-6a-1506 in 2016 and there is still no mention of turn signals. Also, might I add, there will no longer be safety inspections on vehicles after January of 2018 in the state of Utah! Woohoo!!
