On a thumper it's not an 'air screw' its a fuel screw, so instead of allowing more air, it allows more fuel.

Recommend upgrading to the the R&D Flex-Jet remote fuel screw. Better 9 ways to Sunday for just a few bucks more than a cute red anodized alum screw that's still not easy to reach!

It puts a knob on the side of the carb like your idle knob so you can dial that fuel screw in for each exact day you're riding, which is what you should do if you want your thumper to respond crisply and correctly every day ;-) !

Sometimes a thumper will backfire out the pipe when you chop the throttle if it's running a little rich & BF out the carb if lean. Other sources for BF could be an exhaust air leak around the exhaust port or the rear joint seal could be shot. Guys chime in here anytime ;-) !
