xt225 at altitude...need help

Recommended Posts

Just bought an '06 XT225 for my wife. Purchased in Phoenix (1500+/- elev), we live in Flagstaff. It will be ridden mostly between 3500 and 8000 elev. When we got it home that night it had a really hard time starting and running off choke. It is stock everything. No plans to put an aftermarket pipe on.

So the question is, what is the order of operations to get this bike running well at altitude?

I have never done any rejetting to my other bikes because they were already jetted for the altitude, but I'm not afraid to learn on this one.

I'm also posting this one on the Intake/Jetting forum.

Thanks all,

Erik

Is the jetting stock? Stock jetting should be #125 main and #40 pilot. That jetting may work to the altitudes you mention. The cold starting issue can be solved by removing the brass plug that hides the fuel screw and turning the screw out 3 turns from bottomed. Improves starting and decreases warm-up time.

Someone who owns the bike will probably post more info, but you need to be on XT225.com. Anyone who owns an XT225 should go there. I helped my Dad do the "3-turn" adjustment (to help with cold starting) and jetting from the info found there.

This link will help get you started

You should be fine riding at that altitude with your stock jetting. Look into doing the "3 Turn" mod on your pilot screw to help with the hard starting....:)
