Eating Oil

Recommended Posts

Hey guys,

I noticed last year that my drz likes to eat a little oil.

I don't have leaks, change it every 1200 miles, and it seems do just disappear.

What is some of your experience with this?

Believe it or not, 1 qt. in a thousand miles is considered 'acceptable'.

I have found with the DRZ (and most engines, really) that consumption is directly related to RPM. Slow plonking on the trails and consumption is nil, Racing SM or long highway rides consumption goes up.

How much oil? Thumpers often eat some oil, at least all the one I owned did so I would not worry too much about it eating a little oil.

Well I guess my next question is, since this is a dry sump system, how much oil does your bike actually NEED.

To not self destruct immediately, about a quart. The 2 quarts it takes serves a few functions. First, to have enough to always have an adequate supply is the engine consumes some. To have enough oil to slow the total amounts degradation. To enable the oil to carry some of the heat away and shed it to the frame.

Bottom line, you need two quarts at the start of a ride and a top off if needed, at the end.

i've also heard that going from high rpms to closed throttle fast will burn oil as well.
