will r engine go in L frame without issues?

Recommended Posts

I've got a 94 xr250L. I'm going to sell it after rebuilding the top end, but I found a freshly rebuilt R engine for sale and was thinking of going that route. its from a later model though, 2003. any experience here?

I just compared part numbers, the crankcase and cylinder are the same in the r as the l, but the 94 and 2003 are different. answered my own question on the 03

Correct. The XR250R was revamped in 1996, including changing the engine from a wet sump to a dry sump. This change allowed them to change the case and save some weight off the engine. (.7lbs) The head is different too. Which is why you can't buy a Hotcam for a '96-'04 250R and use it in a pre '96 250L OR 250R.

Here is a quick run down of some of the changes in '96:

There used to be an article on line that had outlines of the frame and engine too that showed where it had changed. Can't find it now.
