painting a 03 yz 250 frame? any tips or tricks I should know?

Recommended Posts

my friend has a 03 yz 250, the frame by his boots is super scratched, its all silver and no more yamaha blue paint on it.

he wants to paint it (not sure how). is there any special tricks? or just buy a can of blue spray paint and spray away?

I've done it two ways. With my old Jap crap CX500 project I just stuffed newspaper behind the frame so I didn't overspray onto the engine or anything, CLEANED THE HECK OUT OF IT and hit it with 0 residue brake cleaner, and sprayed away.

With my 1976 Ossa Mick Andrew Replica project we completely dissasembled everything, Wire brush and sanded the frame so it was spotless, CLEANED THE HECK OUT OF IT and hit it with 0 residue brake cleaner, Primed, waited, Scuffed, waited, and painted.

Clean & prep the area, and use a good quality spray paint.

It will only look good for a little while, it will wear off again in a few rides.

Your friend should look for some frame protectors and call it a day. It covers up that part of the frame and you cannot see the scratches
