Sqeaky Wrist

Recommended Posts

I compounded my right wrist about 15 years ago. Recently, on the third day of three days fairly hard riding, the muscle above and to the inside of my wrist became inflamed, swollen, and painful. I iced it several times the day after, (yesterday), and it is much better although still fairly uncomfortable.

And it squeaks. I can't actually hear it squeak unless my arm is lying on my forehead and then I can actually hear it. And I can feel it. I don't know how to describe what a squeak feels like, but that's how it feels.

So is this my joint squeaking or the tendon? And what do I do about it?

I did not crash or fall during the three day ride.

Thanks, Harold

found these two links.

the location of the swelling and pain suggests "intersection syndrome".

here is a link to an x-ray of what my wrist looked like after surgery 15 years ago to correct a misalignment in the initial set.

i've looked at and read about the cti wrist brace. it looks like it's limiting range might be the ticket if i continue having problems?

how long can i expect, perhaps, for the current problem to last? i know, probably depends on the care, (restricted motion), i give it, if i need cortisone etc.

any comments or additional knowledge about this will be appreciated.

thanks, harold

I've modified a conventional wrist brace found in the local drugstore that I'm using for now until I find out if I am going to have a long range problem, at which time I'll probably get the CTI. But for now, it's working pretty good.

Thought I'd post in case others could have the same problem.

I have sprain the same wrist many times and what you are describing happened to me last year. The verdict was that I had gout in my wrist. My regular doctor gave me some pills and the pain went away in a few days. I could hear a small noise in my wrist and I could feel it if I put my other hand over it and moved my wrist. It hurt bad enough that I couldnt open a 2 liter bottle of pepsi. Stay away from fried foods and acidy foods for a while also.

My symptoms were classic for "intersection syndrome " as described in the two links I posted. My wrist, or actually the tendons behind the wrist, are still squeaking some. Experimenting with my body position while sitting on the bike I've learned the squeaking is diminished or not present when my elbows are high and increases when I drop them. My problem occurred after three consecutive days of very hard riding and I now believe the problem was caused by being tired and dropping my elbows. And increased by the misalignment of my broken wrist.

I shall determine to at least keep my right elbow up even when tired.
