Should I be annoyed...?

Recommended Posts

I have a friend who constantly sends me those 'forward this if you agree' type emails, usually involving keeping 'under god' in the constitution, that kind of thing.

He KNOWS I don't share his beliefs... but insists on sending them to me anyway. I'm annoyed.... first off, those annoy me anyway, because they have this way of saying if you DON'T agree with the issue in question, you aren't a patriot, you don't love freedom, etc, etc, etc. Second, I feel like, while he expects me to respect HIS beliefs (which I do, I have no problems with Christianity, or any religion!) mine are ignored while he forwards anything that agrees with his 'agenda'...

I've started a 'nice' dialogue, hoping to get him to think... but like most people on the other side of this subject that I've encountered, I expect him to be offended by the fact that I questioned him sending me those things, rather than me just sucking it up and just deleting them.

I should add, he also is one of those who just blindly sends ANYTHING he likes that lands in his inbox, regardless of accuracy, and rarely snopes ANYTHING...

Am I making a mountain out of a molehill? :)

Add him to your spam filter and be done with it. I've got all kinds of people that used to drive me nuts with the same garbage.

Well, he also is a big organizer in our street riding group... at least, he was before he got married and 'found god' (didn't know god could get lost... but whatevah! :) ) So every now and then he sends something I want to read...

Have you tried just asking him to stop? I know it's easy to say that here, but honestly, man to man, or whatever, just tell him you don't appreciate it. If he's a real friend, he'll pout for a while, but respect your opinion and friendship. If not, well, who wants friends like that? Block him, but only if he doesn't respond to person to person talk.

Usually the newly "found God" people get over letting everybody they know in a couple of months. It can drive one crazy listening to it. :)

You can go a few ways STFU about it way. Blocking and ignoring way. Or please stop way. All quite simple. Be VERY annoyed lol. I guess im Atheist or w/e and i really dont care about others beliefs cool if thats what htey want. But i know i dont want any of it so keep it at church. Kinda like what happens somewhere stays somewhere:thumbsup:

I have a good friend/neighbor that does the same to me. She knows I'm agnostic but I get the same emails, usually using God to say you're patriotic, love America, etc. I've mentioned it to her but her feeling is that I need religion so she keeps sending them. I'm an intelligent, thinking person who has made my own decisions about life. I'm not denying the existence of God, hence agnostic rather than atheist, because I quite simply don't know, but think it's unlikely. At any rate, I think religion is personal and the emails are very annoying. Since I really like the friend, I just delete them. Also, before I forward anything I think about who would enjoy it and only send it to those people, not a mass mailing. I know exactly how they make you feel. Don't even read them... just enough to know it's one of those kind and then hit delete.

She also sends me a lot of the ones asking for prayer to be reinstated in public schools. I am a teacher in a public school. Not all my students are Christians. Some are Jewish, some are Muslim, etc. Public school is for all students regardless of religious belief. She doesn't seem to get that it's not illegal for a student to pray if he/she wants to; we just can't force them to. There are schools based on religions to send your children to if you want. There are plenty of Catholic schools available and even a Muslim one in the area. I really hate those emails because they are implying that all my students are Christian, which they clearly are not. Not all of our teachers are either, for that matter. We have an English teacher from the middle east. If you want religion to be a big factor in your childrens' education, send them to private schools. Let public schools stay as they were intended: to educate America's masses. Many people came to this country to escape religious persecution. Their children should be free to attend a school that allows the same freedom. Ok, I'll get off my soapbox and shut up now!

Yeah, I have a cousin who sends this stuff to me as well, I just hit shift/delete a lot, occasionally she'll send me something interesting or actually important. And I don't want to hurt her feelings, so I ignore it and consider it part of "keeping in touch".

I say just be honest with him and ask him politely to please refrain from sending those types of emails.

Good luck:thumbsup:

Um, my opinion is, you are making a mountain out of a molehill.

People who have the uncontrollable need to forward chain emails cannot help themselves. Usually they hit "sent to ALL" which unfortunately includes you. So it's totally NOTHING personal.

My husband's aunt does this ALL time, with emails that say basically, "Sent it to 10 people you love so they know you love them" with the implied impression that if you don't you are unfeeling unloving jerk. Well, his aunt KNOWS we love her and the family, I've asked her not to send those emails, but she does it anyway. I've told her we LOVE hearing from her and would love to receive emails from the fam telling us how they are doing but we get chain emails instead.

So, like I said it's a compulsive illness (at least, that's what I'm calling it) and they can't help themselves. It's nothing personal. When you see it's a forwarded email don't even open it, 'cause you already know what it is. :) And if they ask, tell them you receive SO many forwarded emails these days that you are so busy you don't have the time to read them all and unfortunately due to time management constraints you HAVE to be selective on what you spend your time on.

I think it would offend me if someone knew I didn't believe in what they did, yet they continually sent me propaganda supporting their views. I'd probably tell that person nicely to please stop sending it and if they didn't, I would probably delete them, even if it meant losing out on some of the organized rides. What a drag that someone feels the need to push their view so severely.

I think that is what bugs me about it... and to make matters worse, and make me MORE annoyed :) I did email him back and explained what I believed, thinking, heck, we can DISCUSS our beliefs, can't we? After all, he's been raising the issue with every stupid chain email he's sent me over the last 2 yrs...

But NOOOO... he seemed to get QUITE offended! Seems par for the course, to me... many people who 'believe' expect you to just suck it up and deal with hearing about their beliefs... heaven forbid ( :banghead: ) you state YOUR beliefs... then they feel they are under ATTACK by the HEATHENS, can we have an a-MEN and praise the lord?

Seriously, I'm even more annoyed than I was before... maybe I didn't handle it perfectly, but why should I be expected to just swallow it while he can't even STAND to hear what I believe?? I wish there were athiest/agnostic chain mails out there... I'd FLOOD him with them, just to make a POINT!! :banghead:

I had this happening too. I was receiving them from my mom and one of my sisters. It annoyed me. I felt that I should not have to delete them anymore. I just asked them not to send them. If you don't like something, do something about it. It's your life after all. It's like receiving spam..from my own family. I didn't like it so, i put a stop to it. You should too.

I've found it also to be true that athiest/agnostic views, if you have them, are supposed to be kept to yourself, while you are expected to listen to the religious statements. I don't know why that is?

Um, I've found that if you have ANY belief that is not mainstream you're supposed to keep it to yourself and any attempt to not participate in the mainstream Godliness is considered rude to the super holy.

That's why I'm telling you to NOT make a big deal about stupid emails. Chose your battles wisely.

Sorry Im a dude and I go to church, but this is exactly what you should do. Start replying with your beliefs or sending off the wall spam, porn or something. One of the key elements of christianity is FREE WILL. Hell God gave us a choice why cant this jackoff respect YOUR free will. I get them all the time at work too and while I agree with most conservative and christian views, I still find them annoying. Unfortunately mine come from clients so I cant just delete them or reply back with less than tasteful replies..Gordo

I'm all for standing up for yourself.

All I'm saying is: IT'S A STUPID EMAIL!!!

LET IT GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO......

Sorry. Life is too short to get upset about a chain email that you can hit delete.

If people took your adice, there would still be slavery, and women would still be expected to wear skirts down to their ankles and this forum wouldn't even exist.

I think quite differently than the norm, but I will not sit quietly by and be stepped on and treated like a circus freak .....except when I played hockey for a team called the Circus Freaks and got beat upon a lot....but that's a whole other story! It's often times the people that don't follow the heard and think mainstream that make things like the internet possible.

Sorry, that was sarcasm, NOT my opinion at ALLLLLLLL.

I've been spit on, beat up, hit, made fun of and verbally abused because we have different beliefs than most people. And, uh, our group is, uh, not known for keeping out mouths shut. Like I said, I'm all for standing up for what you believe in but to make a big deal about a stupid chain email is well, um, making a mountain out of a mole hill.

Sorry, next time I'm gonna put: Sarcasm on: :Sarcasm off next time I say something like that.
