oil leak at valve cover

Recommended Posts

My 07 has a slight oil leak coming from the round rubber plug at the cylinder head cover. How big a deal is it to pull that apart and reseal?

Not too bad. Remember to get the piston at TDC of the compression stroke as if you were going to adjust the valves, this way the cover will go back on properly after you apply the gasket cement. If you don't have one, get a shop manual since it lays out the procedure nice and neat. Clean the mating surfaces throughly and use a good gasket cement designed for high temps and oil exposure and let it cure per the instructions before you run the bike. I had excellent results with Permatex Ultra Grey sensor safe RTV silicone gasket maker(what a mouthful!). Be aware that you'll need to remove the valve covers to remove the cylinder head bolt which is hidden underneath each one. This is clearly shown in the shop manual along with the recommended tightening sequence when you're buttoning it back up. And of course, use a torque wrench on everything.
