Adding spacers to stock springs?

What would happened if I added a 1 inch spacer to a stock for springs? I have a 97 xr650l that I got used. So I don't know what springs it has. I do know that they are to soft for my fat ass. 5 '10' 225 without gear. I am going to change out the oil soon so I figured what can I do on the cheap? I once heard if you add some spacers to the stock springs it help with bottoming out. Is this true? Thanks Guys Ben

All it will do is add pre-load. It'll make the front end ride a little higher, but the spring rate remains the same - which is apparently too light in rate for you.

The only (correct) answer is to install the correct spring rate.

Thanks I ordered some from race tech today. Ben
