Ryan Powell - Why I switched to a Two Stroke

By The General • on June 11, 2009

I have been riding regularly for the past six to seven years. I progressed from the 80 to the 85 then started riding a 250f. After riding and racing the 250f for almost five years, I was ready for a new bike. I really excelled on the 250f and I really think/thought it was a great bike. By that time I was competitive in the C class on the AMA level.

The bike purchase decision was an extremely tough one. It was the beginning of this year when I started looking and there were just so many options. I was really looking at buying the 2009 CRF450R, because i was coming off of a Honda, and I really wanted more power. I am a very thorough person when checking out a purchase, and buying a new dirt bike was a high priority. After enduring the 2009 bikes being released and even then waiting on the tests to come out. (I usually check all the bike tests and comparisons to help me choose, I particularly think MXA has a good brain on bike tests)

Well, after all the research and forum reading and everything, I did not know what to buy. None of the current 450s really caught my eye. They all seemed to have some problem… Then I saw the 250 two stroke. After researching the smokers, I started to sway my thinking....

Yeah I remember seeing the vid of his holeshot then people started dogging him out calling him a sandbagger. I think that's the one. Looked like some pretty good riding to me.

The 2strokes have awesome power, I ride a 250f and we have a 250 smoker (both yamaha). The only complaint against the 250 smoker is that I haven't gotten the suspension and body dialed in. The power's funt o rip but with bad suspension beats the hell outa me

I'm pretty sure that's because he was bragging about destroying the C class on his 2t...when he's obviously a mid-B class or better rider.

Each time a 2T wins, there are always pundits....

Huh? I love 2 strokes....the bike has absolutely nothing to do with it. He's a MUCH better rider than second place. I've watched his videos. People called a spade a spade.

http://www.thumpertalk.com/forum/showpost.php?p=8172987&postcount=1

"450c moto one start with B and A riders (3)

http://s240.photobucket.com/albums/f...450-1start.flv"

Then this:

http://www.thumpertalk.com/forum/showpost.php?p=8175618&postcount=15

"I guess i could move out of the packed c class and join the B riders."

He beat A and B class riders in the 450 class...yet typically races C class and says that maybe he could move up.

So please, enlighten me...in what way was I wrong?

I had a 06 CRF450 and sold it to pick up my 07 yz250 2t. Best decision Ive made! I love the way the 2t power hits and how nimble they are.

Garrett Poucher and Skyler Howes of Garrett Offroad Racing are headed to Dakar!  These US privateers are headed there for their first times but Skyler is fresh off a victory at last week's Baja Rally, won the Sonora Rally in March and this team placed third in the Baja 1000.

They have a fundraising link set up and could use your help.
I raced with Garrett at Baja Rally last year and then both of them at Sonora and was honored to pit with them as well.  They're both super guys and work their assess off.  I think they both have good chances of not only finishing the 11 days of Dakar but placing well.
They're doing some rally training events this Sat, Oct 20 in Santa Clarita, CA and then another Oct 28th in St. George Utah so if you've ever considered learning rally raid navigation, this is your chance!  It's a lot of fun too.  More info on that at the link.

Looking to buy a used Beta 2017 500 RRS from outside California.  Can I plate (Register with CA DMV) the bike in CA?  If so what is the best way?  Don't have the money to put down for a new bike from a Dealer in CA.  Any help or sugguestions would be appreciated.  Thanks in advance.
