Buying a WR400 f. A good idea?

I just sold my KTM 250 EXC and i´m looking to buy another bike (a 4-stroke this time). I´m currently looking at a WR 400 f from 1998. Is this a good bike? Is starting a big issue? The bike apparently has some form of hotstart (a button on the intake rubber boot). Is that really necessary or does it really make starting easier?

I´m thinking of making the bike street legal. Is it possible to wire turn signals from the original ignition or do i have to add a battery to the bike?

1998 was the first year of the WR and since

then a couple of changes has been made.

I think you should get a -00 or newer which

have the following updates:

Better seal of the Acc pump.

Integrated hotstart circuit in the carb body.

Slightly shorter wheelbase, to turn better.

More forward possition of the bars.

High and low speed compression adjustment on the

rear suspension.

Updated fork internals.

More powerful generator.

And most importantly, all european -00 and newer

WR's come with YZ tank and seat.

The starting is not a problem if you follow the


The hotstart button is in most cases not needed,

but it can help if you have crashed or stalled

and it is really hot.

You don't need a battery to add turn signals

unless there is a law about it (not in europe).

A WR 400 from 1998 is what i can afford at the moment.

You wrote that the generator is stronger from -00, how many watts does the generator on a 400 from 1998 produce? And since you are from sweden (like me), are there any difficulties in trying to get the WR 400 streetlegal in sweden?

-00 and newer has 120W generator and before that

it was like 60-70 watts I think.

Even 60 watts is enough to make it streetlegal,

but the headlight will get VERY weak when you

use your turnsignals and brakelight at the same


The real question is why do you want to make it


Keeping it enduro-registered you can still use

it on public roads if you are going to or from

a competion or trainig. Me and my friend have been

stopped by the police several times, doing stupid things, and there has never been any trouble.

All you have to do is join a club and pay 1000:- to SVEMO for the licence.

I´m already a licensed endurorider. I want the bike streetlegal so i can put some motard rims on it. I´m still going to ride enduros with the bike, but at the same time use it for dual sporting purposes.

If it´s street legal the insurance will be less expensive as well.

There shouldn't be any problems making it streetlegal. I made my -87 XR600 streetlegal about 9 years ago and I had to do the following:

Brake light on both front and rear brake.

Get som light on the reg.plate.

Construct a chainguard covering the part of the chain above the swingarm between the sprockets.

Longer fenders both front and rear (Should not be needed today).

High-beam and turnsignal indication-lights on the dash.

A speedo with lights.


You can get away with alot less mods or you may need more stuff done, it all depends on the person that does the inspection.

I still say that you should leave it enduroregistered and just ride it.

i bought a 98 wr400 and i love it. have not had any problems with it that were not my fault. Go for it if that is what you can afford.

i know it was alread ysaid but the 98 was the first year. although it is a good bike it had more problems then the rest of them. i have seen a few 98's loose bottom ends.
