lake erie circle tour

Recommended Posts

Hey guys, i am planning a small trip next spring, i am going to ride my XR250 around lake erie starting in Akron, OH. I'm just going to take a 1 person tent and sleeping bag, maybe a couple other things like a GPS or laptop. I'd like to find out if there's some places along the way with trails or spots go get off the road.

I plan on taking all side roads with no freeways, and while i haven't finalized the route yet i'll probably hop on US-20 to buffalo, then across Ontario on highway 3, then down to Toledo via US-24, then back towards Cleveland on US-20. I've yet to find some attractions along the way so i can let my butt come back to life, but if you live near those state routes or cities and can let me know of any good riding areas along my route i'd appreciate it. Feel free to PM them to me if you're not comfortable posting for the world to see.

Funny, I should be moving up to Cleveland sometime this winter and was thinking the same thing... There's a ferry that goes from Sandusky to Canada, skipping just to the NE side of Detroit, plenty of Casinos... Also wanted to check out Niagra Falls on the way...

I think niagara falls is a good idea, there's a hostel there that's like $20/night. I forgot about that till now.

One thing- how am i gonna lock up my bike @ night? I mean, i want to sleep soundly and not have to worry. wheel lock? Chain it to a tree? What if i stay at the hostel i'm going to have to leave it outside all night. I guess nothing is foolproof but still...

hey thanks for the offers guys, that's awesome! :busted:

Of course, since i've told my brother and a few friends now everyone wants to go. Which is cool, but i can't hit any trails or impose 4 strange dudes camping your backyard ? As this trip gets closer we'll see who stays on board and who drops off, if i do end up going solo i'll definitely PM you guys about the offers.

Thanks,

Mike

Hey RMR...

That is a great idea! Feel free to camp out at my house if you feel like stopping after the 1st 30 mins of your ride.:busted:

One guy, four guy's. It's all good, I got a big back yard, fire pit, & beer fridge in the garage. After a day of riding, a relaxing night of libations & BS around a fire might just be what the doctor ordered :busted:

Hey i should have said this to begin with, i just thought some of you might chime in... any of the ohio guys, you are invited to come along. We can make it one big road trip. I was going to start the ride from Akron, but we can arrange to meet up with some of you elsewhere if you like. Here's a link to the google maps route (so far)-

http://maps.google.com/maps?f=d&source=s_d&saddr=Akron,+OH+44310&daddr=Erie+St+to:Rainbow+Bridge,+Niagara+Falls,+New+York+to:leamington,+on,+canada+to:2648+W.+Grand+Boulevard+Detroit,+Michigan+48208+to:7+south+superior+street+toledo,+oh+to:cedar+point+ohio+to:+akron,+oh&hl=en&geocode=%3BFQpHjgIdSlVM-w%3BFaZ8kQId7ItJ-w%3B%3B%3B%3B%3B&mra=ls&dirflg=h&sll=42.407235,-81.254883&sspn=2.879702,4.938354&ie=UTF8&ll=42.061529,-81.188965&spn=2.895512,4.938354&t=h&z=8

stops (for now) include the naval museum in Buffalo, Niagara Falls, Leamington, ON, Motown Museum in Detroit, Tony Packos in Toledo, Cedar Point (possibly) and then back to our respective homes. This just what i planned with my brother and friend, but my brother lives in FL and my friend doesn't even have a bike right now. So if they opt out for some reason we could do an all enduro run and hit some trails along the way. I added most of the attractions to make it interesting and to give us a nice butt break.

It says it's a 17 hr trip but due to the bikes we ride i was going to conservatively suggest 4-5 hours a day actually traveling the route. If we can go more we can do that. I think i'm going to need some gel bike shorts and more streetable tires. I was thinking 1st or 2nd week of June, not too hot and past the april/may rains.
